Born in 1910,of French-speaking Walloon heritage, Dietrich Meyer, after hearing Reserve Corps member Léon Degrelle speak in Liège, Belgium on July 20th, 1941, prior to the departure of the Wallonische Infantry Battlalion 373 for the Eastern Front, left his hometown of Schaerbeek, for the local recruiting office. In August of 1941,Meyer, a veteran member of the Belgian Rexist Party, he received basic training with the 3rd Infantry Battalion, in Meseritz on the 12th, and took his oath of allegiance on the 25th. Meyer was then transferred to 1. Kp. Wallonian Brigade. The Walloons are attached to LII Corps as part of the 17th Army and serve in the Donetz basin. In March 1942, after a crushing defeat at Gromorayabalka, the wounded Meyer was sent to the rear with the rest of the remaining Walloons- asevere head wound sends Meyer to a reserve hospital, then home for convalescence. In the meantime his comrades of the Walloon Guard were transferred to the Walloon Legion and then were assigned to the 97th L. Infantry Division and sent to the front in June of 1942. At the end of August, Meyer rejoins his comrades, and the Walloons are attached to the Wiking Division and then refitted and sent on rest. Training resumes in Meseritz again, and in June of 1943, the Legion is renamed the SS Sturmbrigade Wallonie after control of the Walloon Legion is transferred to the Waffen-SS from the Heer. Additional training commences at Wildflecken. Due to his actions in the East, Meyer is selected and promoted to NCO-Candidate and sent on a training course at SS-Unterfuhrerschule Arnheim and successfully passes. |

In October 1943, the SS Sturmbrigade is renamed the 5th SS-Freiwilligen Sturmbrigade Wallonien, and is stationed near Tcherkassy-Korsun. During the buildup and deployment of the Wallons to Tcherkassy area, Meyer is selected to receive Officer (Fuhrerschule) training 'Lehrgang für germanische Offiziere' at SS Junkerschule Bad Tolz part of 11. KJL from October 1943, to March 1944, promoted to SS-Untersturmfuhrer on April 1st, with the Walloon candidates. Meyer parades as an officer in the Tcherkassy parades and then is assigned to a Regimental Staff position - Battlaion Adjuntant (Stabs 1a) in the 1. Btl., Regiment 2, SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler which is assembling in France after a rest and refit. Meyer serves with courage in Caen, Falaise and Argentan and the Battle of Aachen and Ardennes, notably. Meyer and the LAH are then finally deployed in Hungary in an attempt to rescue the besieged forces in Budapest and then pulled back to Austria, and surrenders with the Leibstandarte in 1945 to American forces in Steyr. |
